LIT 517: TEACHING CHILDREN'S LITERATURE |
(Dr. Gilbert Cross) |
| Catalogue Description: |
| A course concentrating on the value of literature for children with discussion and demonstration of the various techniques used in teaching it. Additional readings in selected genres will be required. Offered for anyone planning to work with children, preschool through grade nine. |
Prerequisite: Fifteen hours of credit in literature or permission of instructor |
| What We Do: |
| The course takes an interdisciplinary approach to teaching children’s literature. There is class discussion on various articles and theories dealing with teaching traditional literature and modern children’s books. |
| Part 1 of the class covers traditional literature, and each class member produces an interdisciplinary guide on classroom activities based on one folktale. Each student will locate an article on how to teach folktale, mythology, writing and give an oral and written report on each. |
| Part 2 of the class consists of five group presentations (90 minutes maximum) on one particular work of children’s literature. The book is approached via several disciplines--art, social science, math, chemistry, art, literature, etc. A guide is produced, photocopied and presented to each class member for use in his/her classroom. The model for both parts of the semester is Barbara Schutz’s Trickster Tales From Around the World (available from the author, second class meeting). |
