Litr 582:

Wisdom of the People: Ballads, Legends, and Tales

Welcome to Litr 582 Wisdom of the People: Ballads, Legends, and Tales. This class assumes some preparation in folklore, but beginners who work hard should be able to keep up.  We cover two main topics—witches and fairies.

There are two course packs available from Ned’s Bookstore on Cross Street, Ypsilanti, MI 48197.  (Traverse City students: They will mail them if necessary.)

In 2001, class starts on Saturday at 3:00 pm.  Subsequent meetings (including Sunday!!!) will be at 9:00 AM.  On test days, we begin at 9:30 AM.

Test 2: Final

A paper is required.  Traverse City students should submit it within thirty days of the end of the class.  Campus students submit it one week before the final exam.  This paper is to focus on some aspect of witches or fairies.  The paper need not be over 6 pages in length, but it MUST be researched and use MLA or APA format.  Insert footnotes into the text as much as possible. Research is NOT downloading from the Internet.  I want to smell some dust from books you’ve found in a hidden recess of the library.

Sample topics:  The Fairy Midwife, A Visit to Fairyland, Harry Potter as an Apprentice Wizard, Fairies as Depicted in Movies, The True Story of Salem, Spectral Evidence, etc. etc.  Clear your topic with me if you have any doubts.

If you wish to prepare for the class and can’t get the course packs, read anything on the subject of fairies and witches.  If you can find a copy of Atelia Clarkson and Gilbert B. Cross’ World Folktales in the library, read the sections on fairies and witches.  If you haven’t studied folklore before, you will find the section “Research Tools” helpful.
