Dreaming in Color

There are some interesting passages from the book "Dreaming in Color Living in Black and White," by Laurel Holliday, which has real stories of growing up in a world where the color of people's skin set them apart.

I looked around the classroom. I could tell from my classmates' expressions that they all believed I have copied my story out of a book. Nancy Cicero was looking smug, as if to say, "I knew you couldn't have written it,"
I looked at Nat. He was mad. He was clutching the edge of his desk and staring at Mr. Perlman. I turned back to Mr. Perlman and let out all my feelings of anger and frustration.
"I wrote this story myself," I said through clenched teeth, softly at first. I was not even sure I had spoken.
Mr. Perlman smiled. "excuse me, Dianne, you said something?"
"I said I wrote this story myself!" I was yelling. I couldn't hold it in. I struggled to keep from crying in shame and embarrassment. I refused to give him that.
