There are different approaches that professional journalists can take to apply open source or particiapatory journalism. Open source journalism is a collaboration of civic journalists and citizen journalists. For example a journalist asking his or her readers to submit questions that will be used in a story will connect the readers to the story itself.

Journalist allowing readers to be involved in the making of a story may help to dispell bias that may exist or to open the story in many direction as opposed to just one. Gatewatching is the study of how the Internet effects the delivering and receiving of news. Open news is news that anyone can disseminate to anyone else no matter the qualifications. Gatewatching has uncovered problems with the dissemination of open news. News has become a dialogue between people not a fix set of reported facts. This type of news can create bias and send mixed messages depending on which audience is receiving the news.
