Symposium on Reading and Responding to Student Writing:

Scene I

A Conversation About Reading and Responding to Student Writing

(Scene opens with JC sitting in a tiny office. There are three desks crowded into this small room, as well as a large filing cabinet and one bookshelf unit. Two paintings done on construction paper are taped to the wall over her desk. She is holding the phone to her ear while staring at a pile of folders in front of her. Her hair is pulled back in a pony-tail, with random strands falling out at every angle. Her cheeks and neck are red and there is a blue vein pulsing in the middle of her forehead.)

JC: “No... Yes...yes, I know. (Long pause) No, I am not trying to spite you by not coming home to decorate the Christmas tree. I told you- I have 25 portfolios left to grade... respond to. (Another long pause.) No, an hour is not going to be enough time. I have to get the final grades in by tomorrow... Yes, that was the plan. I tried to... evaluate them all on the plane, but you wouldn’t believe what happened.
