Symposium on Reading and Responding to Student Writing

Introduction:

This is a symposium paper that was done for a class called Issues in Teaching of Writing. It has been revised to serve in a web format. Professor William Tucker sponsored this paper's presentation in the Eastern Michigan University Graduate Research Fair on March 28, 2005. I wrote it in play format to symbolize the never-ending conversation that teachers of composition have regarding reading and responding to student writing. It is a simulated conversation between me and several well-known, published teachers of rhetoric and composition. I use quotes from different published works, then respond with my own comments. Though my character often does not represent my views, playing devil's advocate to keep the conversation moving, the problems I discuss within the play are issues that I have had to deal with in my own composition classroom.
