Welcome to Graduate Studies in English at Eastern Michigan University
In keeping with EMU's recent emphasis on strategic planning and development, the graduate program in the Department of English Language and Literature is committed both to the broad tradition of the humanities and to the preparation of students for the specialized needs of the contemporary world. Accordingly, faculty who teach graduate courses have won awards and attracted national recognition for their research and teaching, but also work closely with students to help them achieve their professional and academic goals. Indeed, former EMU graduate students have continued studying in PhD prgrams in English, returned to teaching K-12, and/or pursued successful careers in journalism, creative writing, written communication, and linguistics. Partly, this is because our five areas of concentration combine the emerging trends in theoretical and practical approaches to studies in English: Creative Writing, Children’s Literature, Written Communication (with emphasis in Teaching of Writing, or Technical/Professional Writing), Linguistics, and Literature. The English department also publishes the Journal of Narrative Theory, which is edited by our Literature faculty.
