How to Find Material
in the Library
Books:
Information about all the books in the Halle Library (and other material
such as videos, maps and Journals) is in the Library catalog, http://portal.emich.edu/.
Once
you have located the record for your book, be sure to note its location,
because books are kept in a variety of places in the library.
Examples
of keywords for searching the catalog:
| social service |
AND |
ethical aspects |
| social work administration |
AND |
policy |
| social case work |
AND |
interviewing |
| public welfare |
AND |
rural |
| human services |
AND |

Journals:
To find out what journals the Halle Library owns, search for the title
of the journal in the catalog. Be sure to note the multiple locations of
many journals (i.e. on the 2nd level, microforms, Automated Retrieval Collection,
etc.) and the date ranges for each location. To find out if a journal
is available online, use the
electronic periodicals locator
Major
journals in Social Work include: Child Welfare, Clinical Social Work
Journal, Families in Society (Formerly Social Casework), Social
Service Review,
and Social Work.
Articles:
To find particular articles in journals, use an index or the databases.
Databases are computer files of article citations, abstracts or full-text
articles (depending on the database) taken from published sources.
They are available on subscription, which EMU's Halle Library has paid.
To access the databases, you must either log in from an EMU computer, or,
if you are off campus, use your "my.emich" password.
Course
Reserves: Material that is needed by a large number of students in
a course is "put on reserve." This material is kept behind the Reception
Desk on the First Level and may be checked out for a limited time.
To
see what is on reserve for your class, go to the Halle
Library Catalog, and click on the bar titled "Course Reserves." You can
also search the Library catalog directly for your item. The location will
be listed as Reserves.
