On the cover of A Hope in the Unseen, the following statement follows the title: An American Odyssey from the Inner City to the Ivy League. This title caught my attention and I immediately conjured thoughts of a triumphant story with a young man's undying will to succeed. Author, Ron Suskind delivers this image beautifully through the life of Cedric Jennings. The inner-city, black, high school student has high hopes and strives to succeed academically in order to attend college. Unfortunately, like many students in his position the odds are against him. He faces many external obstacles, but it is the internal struggle between his primary and secondary discourses that is the most disheartening. |
