Evaluation
There were several reasons for having you plan an escape to freedom.
  • We wanted you to know about the painful yet rich history of African Americans.
  • We also wanted you to have an opportunity to find information about slavery on the Internet and then use the information to solve the problem of how to escape safely from slavery.
  • We also wanted you to understand how the subjects (English/Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, Technology and Art) you learn in school are related and can be used to solve problems.
  • Finally, we wanted you to have an opportunity to work with other students.
Know that like the many runaway slaves with much determination and hard work you too can be successful at whatever you do.

The outcome of your experience should be:

  • a map showing how you might safely escape from slavery; your map should have included identify freed and slaved states, safe havens, signs/codes, routes and weather you will look face as well as possible food that you might eat
  • quilt patterns of the Underground Railroad
  • a chart of food items you might eat on your escape from slavery
  • a song that uses at least 5 code words that the slaves used to let others know about your plans to run away
If you did all of what was asked of you then you have done an exemplary job of planning your escape to freedom.

Take a look at the scoring rubric below to see how well you did.
