Culminating Portfolio Project

Kaye L. Kotlarczyk
EDMT 330 T-Th 9-11

Welcome, My name is Mrs. Kotlarczyk and I am a student at Eastern Michigan University.  I am studying to become an elementary teacher majoring in Language Arts and Science.  I will soon be completing my classes and conducting my Student Teaching requirements.  This portfolio is a representation of the different technology skills that I have learned while in my EDMT 330 class based on the International Society for Technology in Education and the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers.  With this knowledge of technology, I will be able to incorporate technology in my classroom to benefit my students by enhancing their learning and by creating a more efficient classroom.

I will begin this portfolio by defining a standard according to (NETS) followed by two indicators of achievement.  I will then reflect on why my sample work aligns with the standard and to what extent I have mastered the ability and how I mastered the skill. Links will be provided to each sample assignment. Finally, I will state what achievement level I have mastered.

Self Assessment based on the ISTE National Educational
Technology Standards (NETS) for Prospective Teachers

        Standard 1         Standard 2         Standard  3      Standard 4      Standard 5      Standard 6

Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts.  Teachers:

          A.  demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology                 (as described in the ISTE National Education Technology Standards for Students)

          B.   demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and
                 emerging technologies.

    Indicators of Achievement:

  •  Identifies the benefits of technology to maximize student learning and facilitate higher order thinking skills.
  •  Demonstrates sound capabilities to locate and critically evaluate Internet information resources.
  • Regularly uses electronic mail, bulletin boards, and chat as a means of personal and professional communication.

I created a telecollaborative lesson plan on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s influences on Core Democratic
Values. The lesson begins with a PowerPoint presentation that introduces Martin Luther King, Jr. and
gives an example of Martin Luther King's beliefs. After the PowerPoint presentation is completed, the
students will be taken to the computer lab where they will be instructed on how to conduct a safe
    internet experience.

I taught this PowerPoint presentation to my fellow colleagues in my class at Eastern Michigan
University.  It helped me to gain experience preparing a presentation using PowerPoint and how to
teach a lesson while using PowerPoint. My future students will be able to better understand a lesson          when they have a visual to accompany the lesson I am teaching.  By conducting this assignment I was     able to demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts.

       Level of Proficiency:

I believe my skill ability to be at the proficient level:  consistent, appropriate application, a solid
    performance (3).

Teachers plan and design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology.

       A.  design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology-enhanced
instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners.

       B.   apply current research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning
             environments and experiences.

       C.    identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability.

       D.   plan for the management of technology resources within the context of learning activities.

       E.   plan strategies to manage student learning in a technology-enhanced environment.

        Indicators of Achievement:

    •  Designs and develops student learning activities which are proficient at achieving learning
       goals that integrate technology.
    •  Designs lessons in which technology supports subject matter curriculum learning.
    •   Uses technology in a variety of instructional roles:  e.g., to provide visual examples, to facilitate
communication, to manipulate or display data, etc.

During my EDMT class, I needed to incorporate a website that would accompany my lesson on Martin
Luther King, Jr.  I would be using this website as a site that my students would visit to get additional
information.   I needed this site to be educational, student-friendly, and a site that I feel comfortable my
students accessing.  By using the Web Site Evaluation & Internet Lesson Plan Guide, it made the job of
evaluating a site quicker, easier and more thorough.  It is a more efficient way to evaluate any website for
use in the classroom.  It helped me to plan and design a learning environment that is supported by
technology.   Evaluating websites that are used by your students is a necessity.  Using the Evaluation Guide
             makes the task effortless.

             Level of Proficiency:

Based on the achievements that I have accomplished, I believe I am at the Proficient level (3) consistent,
             appropriate application, a solid performance.

Teachers implement curriculum plans, that include methods and strategies for applying technology to
         maximize student learning.  Teachers:

             A.  facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology

             B.  use technology to support learner-centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students.

             C.  apply technology to develop students' higher order skills and creativity.

             D.  manage student learning activities in a technology-enhanced environment.

          Indicators of Achievement:

My goal in developing a scavenger hunt and key was to give my students experience in finding
information on the internet.  I created an answer key to provide students with a quick way to find
out if their answers were correct while the information is still fresh in their minds.  When students
use the internet for information and research, it maximizes and supports their learning by having
them access a larger quantity of information  easily.  When students use the internet, they are able
                    work to their natural pace.
            Level of Proficiency:
Based on my accomplishments I would place myself at a basic level (2) minimal achievement,
                    appropriate to situations.

Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies.

             A.  apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment

             B.  use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to
improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.

             C.   apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology resources
                    for learning, communication, and productivity.

Indicators of Achievement:

For my unit 2 Telecollaborative lesson, I developed a rubric by using an online rubric generator from the
website.  The rubric generator allows me to use technology while assessing
my students learning of the lesson topic.  By using a rubric generator, it is more efficient
and extremely versatile because it allows you to create a rubric on any topic.

             Level of Proficiency:
Based on my accomplishments I would put my level of achievement at Basic (2) minimal achievement,
                     appropriate to situations.

Teachers use technology to enhance their productivity and professional practice.  Teachers:

                A.  use technology resources to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.

                B.  continually evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions regarding the
use of technology in support of student learning.

                C.  apply technology to increase productivity.

                D.  use technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger community in order
                      to nurture student learning.

                Indicators of Achievement:
