Electronic Portfolio

Joell Edmunds

    During my educational experiences I have learned different ways to integrate  and  apply technology skills within a K-12 classroom. This portfolio is organized to show different types of self-assessment materials based upon the six proficiencies of the ISTE Standards .

I.Demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts:
*Demonstrate Introductory knowledge, skills and  understanding of concepts related to technology;
*Demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.

          A spreadsheet is an introductory tool to use for students to gain knowledge and understanding of concepts and skills related to technology. The nice thing about spreadsheet is that you can use then to integrate into most lessons of content. I used a spreadsheet during a goldfish unit with second grade students to help include math and technology. The spreadsheet gave students a new way to view data increasing their technology skills and knowledge.

        Data was collected during a classroom snack period. Each student was given ten goldfish crackers. The crackers now are available in a variety of colors instead of plain orange. Students hypothesized that the crackers contained more orange then other colors even though new colors were added. As a group we conducted a small experiment to see if the hypothesis was correct. In our experiment students were shocked to realize purple was the dominating color within their snack crackers with orange crackers coming in second, red third and green last.

II.  Plan and design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology:
*Design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners;
Apply current research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning environments and experiences;
* Identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability;
* Plan for the management of technology resources within the context of learning activities;
* Plan strategies to manage student learning in a technology enhanced environment.

The AS-L experience was not only an excellent experience that I enjoyed it also was instrumental in helping learn and achieve the following course objectives Planning and designing effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology, as well as implementing curriculum plans that include methods and strategies for applying  technology to maximize student learning. I learned that technology can be integrated and used in many ways to help enforce skills of all areas. This particular lesson technology helped students not only recognize words by connecting them with graphics on the screen but helped students with the retelling of the story which introduced them to recognizing and reading words. I choose a PowerPoint story instead of reading a book because I created this lesson for all students to be actively involved throughout the lesson. I learned that at this young age PowerPoint is an excellent resource to help students connect objects to words which helps to encourage all students to be involved throughout the lesson.

III. Implement curriculum plans that include methods and strategies for  applying technology to maximize student learning:
*Faciliate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards;
*Use technology to support learner-centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students;
*Apply technologies to develop students' higher order skills and creativity;
* Manage student learning activities in a technology-enhanced environment.

     The Internet is know one of the greatest resource tools that are used. Teachers can implement curriculum plans that include strategies for applying technology to help students gain knowledge in technology as well as content being covered. I created a internet scavenger hunt on the Berlin Wall as a way to introduce the new content unit. The scavenger hunt enhances technology skills students will use this tool regularly for years to come. It helps students become more comfortable with technology as well as builds and manages their research skills in a technology enhanced environment.

IV. Apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies:
* Apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment strategies;
*Use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning;
* Apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication and productivity.

     Technology contains a great deal of support for teachers. One  tool I feel I will utilize to its fullest is the test generator QuizStar. QuizStar is an assessment program that teachers can create quizzes for students to take on the computer.  I feel that  by creating test on the computer now and then will not only help with integrating technology into a lesson but students will become more comfortable using technology.     QuizStar has many advantages to its use besides the integration of technology within the assignment. When using a test generator it not only helps by cutting down on time teachers spend checking and grading it also is able to give students their graded results right away. The use of this technology helps by printing out a item analysis containing the classes performance. This will help a teacher to see where developed knowledge was gained through the content lesson and then a teacher is able to use that as a guide in deciding if certain areas need reteaching to fulfill learning objectives. It will also give an idea of what worked best in teaching the content to keep in mind for future students.

V. Use technology to enhance their productivity and professional practice:
* Use technology resources to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong learning;
* Continually evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions about the use of technology in support of  student learning;
*Apply technology to increase productivity;
* Use technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger community in order to nurture student learning.

     Technolgy has potential to enhance productivity and professional practice. I have learned that by creating a classroom webpage increases potential for communicating and collaborating with peers, parents, as well as the community. This gives students great opportunities to become comfortable with the technology as well as be involved with others.  I designed a classroom webpage that acted as a news letter for both parents and students. The webpage introduced the upcoming content unit that will be soon covered in class. As well as gave learning objectives, useful links, classroom assignments to expect, and a note to parents to remember they are always welcomed to join in any lessons of interest, encouraged to be involved in their child's development and growth, and communication and feedback is always helpful in all forms whether questions, comments or suggestions in helping increase their students development of new concepts. I feel more feedback received may be increased by using the webpage instead of a newsletter or note sent home. Along with students will gain confidence in using technology as they check the webpage announcements weekly.

VI. Understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and apply that understanding in practice:
* Model and teach legal and ethical practice related to technology use;
* Apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics and abilities;
* Identify and use technology resources that affirm diversity;
* Promote safe and healthy use of technology resources;
* Facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all students.
     Teachers not only have to cover content standards but also have to try and teach skills that deal with understanding social, ethical, legal,and human issues. Technology can be nicely integrated into lessons dealing with these issues. By doing so students have to practice their understanding of technology skills and practice different technology streets to complete assignment. This gives students a greater development in their technical skills.

     In the NteQ lesson plan Students will incorporate the following computer functions:  Search for resources, create test generated survey questions, telecollaborate and exchange communication, organize information, support brainstorming, display information in chart/spreadsheet, support writing process, present results, record their performance within the process of completing the project. As well as students will have the opportunity to research and collaborate with many different people on different diverse issues. This lesson uses technology as a way to help students learn diversity and have a chance to research different aspects on ethical issues and have their voices heard. The lesson was designed to help students understand and develop collaboration skills by working in cooperative groups. Social skills and teamwork were highlighted to enhance skills that they will use throughout their lives.
